Outdoor Gas Firepit

How do I run a gas line from my basement to an outdoor firepit?
I am seeking experienced and knowledgeable people only. Please do not reprimand me for making this a DIY project and tell me to cal my local gas company. I know how to run the gas line (shut off incoming, drain line by lighting range, etc). I am asking what type of line is best (flexibe vs.stiff), the diameter needed, and so on. I will be tapping into a “T”in my basement. The line needs to run about 20 feet to the foundation wall and then another 20 feet to where I will be creating a gas firepit. Again, which type and size of line is best? Would it be best to use some sort of conduit? All answers are appreciated.
First, check with your local building codes. If you use an unapproved product it can cause problems with your insurance if something happens. Some people swear by the flexible stainless steel tubing, but it IS very difficult to install properly by an amateur. There have been some reports of the stainless steel pipes being subject to lightning strikes unlike the old fashioned iron pipes. You might Google this for more info. I know you said don’t suggest the gas company, but I can’t resist. Insurance companies love to get out of paying for damages if they can prove it was the result of a do-it-yourself project.
